DFUTURE is pleased to announce the publication of the third edition of Belgium: The State of the Federation, a comprehensive and updated analysis of the major political developments that have shaped Belgium since 2012. The book is open access (!) and authored by Kris Deschouwer (DFUTURE), Didier Caluwaerts (DFUTURE), Petra Meier (University of Antwerp), Min Reuchamps (ISPOLE UCLouvain), Dave Sinardet (DFUTURE) and Emilie van Haute (ULB - co-chair DFUTURE+SciencePo ULB programme @ Brussels Institute for Advanced Studies (BrIAS)). This new edition examines a decade of significant political change, including the implementation of the sixth state reform, the transformation of the party landscape, elections at all levels of government, democratic innovations, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the growing political challenges posed by climate change. The book provides a nuanced and analytically rigorous account of Belgian politics, paying particular attention to the territorial, linguistic, and political divisions that continue to structure the country's political system. It offers valuable insights into how consociational democracy and federalism have enabled democratic governance in a deeply divided society, while also highlighting the tensions and challenges that accompany these arrangements. As such, the volume is an important resource for students and scholars interested in Belgian politics, democracy, federalism, democratic innovation, and comparative politics more broadly.
